The judges evaluate kitesurfers based on height, commitment, technical difficulty, and extremity. The criteria and weightings are:
Radicality (60%): Assesses height and commitment of jumps and tricks. Higher jumps and more extreme performances earn higher scores.
Execution (40%): Evaluates technique, timing, precision, and style of tricks. Good execution and perfect timing result in higher scores.
Scores range from 1 to 10, with a maximum total score of 20 (sum of the highest two scores). Competitors have five attempts to perform their tricks. Three mandatory tricks include a backroll rotation, a frontroll rotation, and a boardoff. After the mandatory tricks, competitors can perform two additional tricks of their choice to showcase creativity and earn extra points. The mandatory trick rule does not apply to female participants.
The criteria and rules aim to evaluate competitors on various aspects of their performance, including height, commitment, technical difficulty, timing, style, and originality. The winners are those who consistently deliver impressive, technically strong, and creative performances throughout the competition.
The YoungCapital Dutch Championship Big Air Kitesurfing has an intense program with 18 men and 9 women. The competition follows a classic heat ladder format, where the participants are divided into different heats. After the preliminary rounds, the best performers advance to the next round, while others get a second chance in the “losers bracket”. It’s a spectacle of action and competition!
